That blue tower of hair and raspy voice is iconic. It’s
Marge, the sassy mother on the hilarious animated TV show that has entertained
audiences since 1989. With 23 seasons,
totaling 500 episodes, it’s no surprise that a reference to The Simpsons could be found in even an
advertisement for Anti-Frizz Cream.
People are attracted to products with familiar images on
them. At least that’s what big corporations seem to think. Why else would they
hire celebrities to endorse their products?
That’s where Marge comes in. Seeing her obelisk of a hairdo
tied to a product reminds people, via humor, of a childhood watching TV with
the family. People want to bring that product home.
Maybe you didn’t even know who Marge was! Did you still
believe Dove could give you “foxy momma hair” as the fine print claimed?
The first image shows a woman (albeit a cartoon) questioning
her hairstyle; the second depiction is of a pleased, calm woman with the
conventional flowing locks (albeit blue
flowing locks) that society seems to strive for.
Dove knows women want to sport the perfect hairdo. The company recently
conducted a survey of 1000 women: only 7% of those women claimed to love their
hair.
Furthermore, the survey revealed that 1 in 5 women have
actually passed on a social event because of ‘bad hair’.
Personally, I often have bad hair days; however, with a hat and 5-inch heels to detract
the attention away from my ‘do, I’m out the door.
Would you let bad hair keep you from living? Dove seems to
think so.
