Love the Lump!

This ad is a great empowerment tool for women. It tells them they don’t have to be Victoria’s-Secret-model thin. Being physically fit is what women should be striving for, and Nike knows it!

While the ad may have been more effective if the girl was smiling (because she just loves her booty so much), her stance in the photo does make her seem powerful and confident. This tells girls that if they embrace what the bodies they have, they can knock down any obstacles, or at least, not hate their bodies, like 78% of American girls (age 17 and up) do.

The positioning of the text helps emphasize the message too. Several lines are indented away from the girl’s booty to highlight her pride. It’s as if she has a some self-esteem force field that blasts the letters away from her.

Some argue that the image has been altered; the girl doesn’t actually have a C-shaped derriere. It does seem hypocritical of Nike to post an image about embracing bodies when they can’t accept a 'natural' one for their ad. Also, some people are upset that Nike uses only 'athletic' women and not 'real' women. Aren't people who go to the gym 'real' people? Isn't Nike trying to sell 'athletic' wear?

People will always find things to complain about. Nevertheless, the message is still meaningful! Love your body!
