Why Pay more for a Product?

Why did I pay over $4 dollars for a Starbucks Hot chocolate? What about Starbucks made me pay the extra money?
After having a hot chocolate from Starbucks I question myself why did I spend $4 dollars on a hot chocolate? I could’ve gone to the dining hall and get several cups of hot chocolate for free. At that moment I came up with multiple reasons why buy Starbucks instead of dining hall hot chocolate. Even though, the reasons were not strong enough I made myself believe that the money I spend on the hot chocolate was worth it. My first reason was because Starbucks hot chocolate tastes better than the one at the dining hall. However, in reality I can’t find differences between the two drinks both are always really sweet. Then my second reason was because at Starbucks they write my name on the cup where I get my drink. My final reason was because going to Starbucks reminds me of my good times back at home.
As I analyze my own reason I came to the conclusion that those $4 dollars that I pay was not for the drink. Instead, it was for the brands name that according to society Starbucks products are on of the best places to get coffee. Also, I pay for the comfort that Starbucks makes me feel when I am there. The familiar feeling that I get at Starbucks reminds me of my home and my good times with my friends. As well the attention that Starbucks gives back to the consumer by simply asking for the clients name and writing it on the cup makes me feel appreciated.
My conclusion was that Starbucks has managed to create an environment that can easily manipulate individuals to purchase their expensive product by using the clients’ emotional needs. In reality when one shops at Starbucks we might not be paying the cost of the quality of the drink but we are buying other factors in my case was comfort and memories.
So are you willing to pay extra money to get the sense of comfort and familiarity?
